For years—even decades—I’ve been dreaming of making a mouse house for a Christmas decoration and I’ve finally done it. Almost! I was on track and making good progress with the project when one problem after another tried to stop me. They slowed me down, but I continued onwards. Finally, I got the house barely habitable, and the first mouse pair moved in.
Along the way, I decided not to make the mouse house strictly a Christmas decoration, but instead, to make it a winter abode. That way, I could enjoy it for much longer each year.
The only difference was that I didn’t “build in” anything that was specifically Christmas.
Behind the painted front is a stair-step structure on which wide led candles sit. There ill be a piece that fits within the stairs in the back, and the inside of it, which is viewable through the window and door, will be painted like the inside of the mice's burrow. I’m thinking of painting a fireplace along that wall. I have a set of three tiny led lights which are red and orange. They flicker and are meant to simulate a fire. Perfect!
I’ll add a door that opens and closes and probably also glass in the window. The snow will have more painting, specifically shadows indicating slight ups and downs on the flat surface and maybe also some trails of mouse tracks.
And I suppose there should be some furniture. There are so many opportunities to add things, and I’ll be working on it over time, hopefully adding some new detail each year. Maybe I’ll even be inspired to make a summer house. Oh, and I think more mouse family members may visit—or even move in!
I'm soooo happy to finally have my mouse house, complete with mice!
