A Great Time

I’m giving myself a treat these nine days! I’ve joined Ida Anderson Lang’s 2025 New Year’s Drawing Retreat and am really enjoying it, as well as learning so much. Drawing is my favorite medium, and I’ve been doing it for a long time, but there’s always more to learn.

And isn’t that one of the best things about creating art!?

I rarely draw people, and I’d have to say that the only people I’m interested in drawing are young women and girls. Fortunately, that’s the subject for this, our main project.

Perhaps I should explain that what’s behind her head is a starfish. The first of two warm-ups in this retreat was drawing seashells, so when I found myself giving her pearl and shell earrings and shells for buttons, I decided to take that theme a little further. I think it’s more interesting that just a portrait. It hints a tiny bit at a story.

If it strikes you that I’ve drawn a whole lot of tiny scale shapes to cover her dress, you’re right! I suppose it could drive one crazy, but when I’m in the right mood, I find it calming. Just doing the same little thing over and over again, and eventually I’m rewarded by finishing!

It’s been stormy all day, so I just stayed inside and drew! I can’t think how long it’s been since I’ve done so much drawing in a single day. It was a treat! But it will probably be quite a while before I have another day like this one! And I’m wondering if my right arm will ache tonight?

If you haven’t heard of Ida Anderson Lang, find her on the internet. She lives in Denmark and is an artist and teacher. Like me, her favorite medium is drawing. I think her favorite subject is people (women), but she draws all kinds of things. I think you’d enjoy seeing her work.

In the new year, I’ll continue with lots of drawing. What about you? Have you gathered intentions for 2025?
